Ask Not The Sparrow How The Eagle Soars

This week we open with music from Kill La Kill, a fast paced and action packed anime with a badass female character. Rarely does anime have a tale of revenge with a female as the lead protagonist. I highly recommend this fans who love well developed characters, great animation, and awesome battles that rival previous shows like Dragon Ball Z or Bleach.

We also take a listen to other animes like Cowboy Bebop, Bleach and more!!! If you enjoy the show please subscribe on iTunes

Big O! Showtime!

The opening soundtrack for this episode is from Big O! This is such a great show made during the tail end of the golden era of anime. The anime is awesome as well as the voice acting. The main character, Roger Smith, is a suave "negotiator" voiced by Steve Blum. The animation itself reminded me a lot of Batman : The Animated Series. The soundtrack is a mixture of jazz, electronic, and orchestral but my personal favorites would be any of the jazz themes.

Other music featured on the show included Sword Art Online, Ayakashi, Hellsing Ultimate, Code Geass, Ruroni Kenshin, and Akira.

Survivability Takes Priority

Episode six has a much more laid back approach. I opened with one of my favorite anime films called Eden of the East. The music was composed by Kenji Kawai who did one of the most iconic anime soundtracks to date, Ghost in the Shell. The soundtrack really stuck with me because of it's downtempo, jazzy sound that combines many synths and electronic drums as well as a live orchestra. In my opinion it has some of the best orchestration to date. I would also highly recommend watching both the Eden of the East show and films , it will not disappoint!

Other music featured on the podcast include Project K, Kiki's Deliver Service, Psycho Pass, Tokyo Ghoul, Space Dandy, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Samurai Champloo.

Back Again!

Back to the show! Apologies for such a long delay but we have some great artists on this episode! One of my favorite animes and soundtracks featured on episode 5 is Code Geass. It portrays a very hyper-realistic image of royal families by showing their tyrannical nature as well as having a black sheep of the family. The soundtrack is very well written with a big orchestra playing Latin rhythms and chords but also having some classical themes that fit with the royal family dynamic. I would highly recommend this as a much watch for anime.

Other anime soundtracks featured on this episode are My Neighbor Totoro, Kids On the Slope, Elfen Lied and many others!

The Puppet Master

Episode four has quite an eclectic range. Ghost in the Shell : Stand Alone Concept made the cut since the new film is off the wall awesome. I am also in love with Yoko Kanno's music which is a big plus. Stand Alone Complex is a fantastic continuation of the story. It is an extremely intelligent and thought provoking show much like original film and I highly recommend listeners to take time to watch it. It can get quite complicated at times but have patience. :)

A few others that are featured on the show are Death Parade, Macross, Gungrave, Grave of the Fireflies, Space Dandy, Howl's Moving Castle, and Angel Beats.

See You Space Cowboy....

Welcome back to episode 3 listeners!

This time we go for a trip down memory lane with a 90's only episode. I chose this era because it is a highlight in the anime genre and, arguably, its golden age. So many great animes and anime seasons came out of this time period. Shows such as Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Gundam Wing, Macross Plus, and many more!

Cowboy Bebop completely changed the structure of storytelling in anime, Neon Genesis gave us one of the greatest soundtrack's ever, Ghost in the Shell led to the creation of the Matrix, and Sailor Moon gave girls their own superheroes. That's only naming a few! I strongly recommend any fan to get out of this era and take a trip back to the 90s where everything changed.

I wish I could have included more music but there are way too many good soundtracks. Maybe I'll revisit the again 90s in a later episode. ;)

"The Nameless Monster"

In episode 2 we explore some darker animes starting with the opening theme from Monster. This anime and its soundtrack are somewhat unusual and I have yet to see or hear anything like it. Monster is different because it feels entirely realistic. In almost all animes there is a supernatural or science fiction element to them but this is, for the most part, set in the real world featuring realistic and believable characters. I highly recommend reading the manga AND watching the show.

Other OSTs featured on the this episode are Baccano!, Hotarubi no Mori e, Project K, Gangsta, Lupin the III, Hellsing Ultimate, Tokyo Ghoul, Full Metal Alchemist, Wolf's Rain, and Terror in Resonance.
